lolPing logo Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about lolPing, from installation to advanced features.

What is lolPing? +

lolPing is a desktop toy that brings League of Legends' ping and emote system to your entire desktop. It allows you to hold Alt (⌥ Option on Mac), drag, and release to place pings that appear with animations and sounds over any application or game. You can also use Ctrl (⌃ Control on Mac) to open an emote wheel with League's official emotes or your own custom images. The app also features an AI teammate that you can summon with Win (⌘ on Mac) to get instant assistance, explanations, or to perform tasks.

How do I install lolPing? +

Windows:

  1. Download the latest lolPing-Setup-.exe from the GitHub releases page.
  2. Run the installer. Windows SmartScreen may warn you; select "More info" and then "Run anyway".
  3. lolPing will open its settings and move to the system tray. Hold Alt and drag anywhere to start pinging.

macOS (Experimental):

  1. Download the latest lolPing--arm64.dmg from the GitHub releases page.
  2. Open the DMG and drag lolPing into your Applications folder.
  3. When you first open it, macOS will display a security warning. Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security and click "Open Anyway".
  4. The app will request Accessibility permissions, which are required for it to read your mouse and keyboard input. Grant this in System Settings.
Is lolPing free to use? +

Yes, lolPing is completely free to use. The core features—pings, emotes, and the room system—are free. The AI teammate feature is also free to use, but you will need to provide your own API key from supported providers like OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, etc., or use a local model.

What are the system requirements? +

Windows: Windows 11 (64-bit) is the primary target. Windows 10 may work but is not officially tested.

macOS: Requires an Apple Silicon Mac (M1 or later) and macOS 13 or later.

Linux (Experimental):strong> Requires a genuine X11 session, XInput 2.1/XTest, and a compositor. Wayland is not supported. Requires Node.js 22.12+, a C++20 compiler, and libx11-dev libxi-dev libxtst-dev.

How do the pings work? +

lolPing uses a small native helper application to capture low-level mouse and keyboard input. When you hold the trigger key (Alt by default) and drag, the helper swallows that input so the application you're working in doesn't see it. It then communicates with the main Electron app, which draws the ping wheel in a transparent, click-through, always-on-top window. When you release, the selected ping is drawn on your screen with its animation and sound, and can be seen by anyone watching your stream.

Can I use my own images for emotes? +

Yes, you can add your own images to the emote wheel. In the settings, go to the "Emotes" section and click "Add image...". You can also drag and drop image files directly onto the emote list. The app supports PNG, JPG, GIF, and WebP formats, with a limit of 24 custom images. Each image will play its own unique animation effect (spin, bounce, heartbeat, etc.) that you can preview and customize in the settings.

What is the AI teammate and how does it work? +

The AI teammate is an optional feature that lets you get AI assistance anywhere on your screen. You turn it on in Settings → Features, then configure a "profile" by selecting a provider (like OpenAI, Anthropic, etc.), pasting your API key, and choosing a model. Once set up, you can hold Win (⌘ on Mac), drag to create a "ping" over something you want to ask about, and release to get an instant answer. The AI will respond with a short text line, its own pings highlighting key points, and a detailed card with the full answer. It can perform actions like copying text, filling forms, or even editing code if you use a coding agent like Claude Code.

How does the "Room" feature work for playing with friends? +

The room feature lets you share pings and emotes with friends in real-time. One person creates a room, copies the generated code (e.g., PING-7KQ4M-2HXTR), and shares it with friends. Friends can join by pasting this code. Pings and emotes are end-to-end encrypted and appear on everyone's screen at the same location (scaled to their resolution). You can also send text messages, start surrender/ready checks, and see who is in the room. It works over the local network or the internet via public Nostr relays, allowing friends to play together even if they're not on the same network.

Does lolPing interfere with League of Legends or other games? +

No. lolPing is a "desktop toy" and does not read, change, or hook into League of Legends or any other application. It operates by overlaying graphics and playing sounds on top of whatever is on your screen. It does not inject any code into other processes. For fullscreen games, pings are disabled by default to prevent conflicts, but this can be configured in the settings.

Is it safe to use lolPing? What data does it collect? +

lolPing is designed with privacy in mind. When checking for updates, it only sends your IP address and the app's version number to GitHub. When using the AI teammate, it sends a screenshot of the area you're asking about, the app/window title, the conversation history, and your custom instructions to the AI provider you have configured. All data is sent over encrypted connections. Your API keys and conversation history are stored locally on your computer and are never sent to any servers. The room feature uses end-to-end encryption so that only the people in the room can see your pings and messages.

How do I update lolPing? +

lolPing automatically checks for updates every 6 hours after launch. When an update is found, a notification will appear on your screen. You can also check for updates manually from the tray menu or in Settings → App → About.

Windows: The update process is automatic. It downloads the installer, verifies it, installs it silently, and restarts the app.

macOS: The app downloads the new DMG to your Downloads folder. You will need to manually drag the new app into your Applications folder to replace the old one, and re-enable Accessibility permissions, as macOS resets them for unsigned apps after every update.

How can I contribute to the project? +

Contributions are welcome! You can contribute by opening issues, submitting pull requests, or joining discussions. Before submitting a pull request, please read the AGENTS.md file, which outlines the project's conventions, behavioral rules, and code standards. When creating a pull request, use Conventional Commits for the title and keep your changes focused on a single feature or bug fix.

What are the known limitations? +
  • The wheel cannot open over administrator-level windows (e.g., Task Manager).
  • Exclusive-fullscreen games will draw content over the pings.
  • Sharing a single window does not include the pings; share your entire screen instead.
  • While in a room, the Tab key is captured to show the room panel.
  • While lolPing is active, Ctrl+drag opens the emote wheel, which may conflict with other shortcuts.
  • The AI teammate is not available on Linux yet and cannot interact with administrator-mode windows.
  • On macOS, the wheel cannot open during secure screens (login, password prompts).
